Monica Medellin

Monica Medellin is a filmmaker, creator, and executive producer known for SHAPING premium sports and culture storytelling.

She is the creator and executive producer of Surf Girls on Prime Video, the platform’s first women’s sports documentary, and also executive produced Surf Girls International, which earned a PGA Award nomination in the Outstanding Sports Program category.

Her work has been recognized by the Emmys, Clios, Forbes, Sports Business Journal, ELLE, and Shondaland, among others.

Up next, she is gearing up to premiere The Future is Flag, which she directed and executive produced. The documentary series, airing on Prime Video, follows prominent women’s flag football players and is produced in partnership with Michael Strahan’s SMAC Entertainment and Under Armour’s Lab96.

Monica has developed, directed, produced, filmed, and edited content for leading brands and studios including Nike, the Olympics, LA28, Prime Video, Hello Sunshine, TOGETHXR, Red Bull Media House, Skydance Sports, World Surf League, Vans, and McDonald’s, and has collaborated with talent such as Reese Witherspoon, Gabrielle Union, Alex Morgan, Sue Bird, Chloe Kim, and Simone Manuel.

Born and raised in Santa Monica, Monica began filming surf and skate culture at a young age and later co-founded The Gnar Gnar Honeys, a creative collective that evolved into her first production company and helped establish her as a leading female filmmaker of color in action sports.

She holds a degree in journalism from the University of Oregon, has worked as a video producer for the Los Angeles Times, and remains deeply committed to expanding access to filmmaking for women.

Monica also publishes Waves Made Weekly, a free newsletter reaching more than 2,000 filmmakers and offering practical guidance on navigating the film and television industry.
